storing scraps

Hope you had a great holiday weekend!
I thought I would talk about organizing a bit more since it is one of my favorite subjects. :)

As I watched tv Saturday night and cleaned off my desk, I tackled a task I do every so often.
I took my entire plastic folder of patterned paper scraps and cut them all down to 4" x 5.5"!
Shocking. I know.

I have been doing this for several years and I LOVE IT!
The card bases that I buy are this size so once my scraps are cut down, it is very easy to pull a card together.

Here's the stack that I cut down Saturday night.
As you can see, it was quite a bit of paper! It took me about an hour but I enjoyed it.

I store these in a cute little bowl I bought at a yard sale at Jenni Bowlin's house. (She has the best yard sales!)
I keep it on a lower shelf of my trestle desk next to a huge pail of ribbons that I have thrown in together.
As you can see, the front half is cardstock, organized by color, the back half is patterns, all mixed in together.

I try very much to only keep the scraps that I can cut to 4x5.5.
The exception to that is white, cream, kraft and black cardstock.
I use those colors constantly to punch things out so I keep them if they are a bit smaller.
But 75% (or more) of my scraps are 4x5.5. I do have a few beloved papers that are like 4x4, 3x3.

What do I do with the rest? I toss them!

In addition to this stack, I have a very small stack of papers I've cut to 6x6.
Just a few papers that I love so much, I did not want to cut them all the way down.

Now, here's a tip: If I had to do this again and start from the beginning - I would cut them down to 4x6 because I love 4x6 mini albums and these would be perfect for that!

I'm thinking that my future 4x6 albums will be 4x5.5 because I need to use this stash and because the photos I get developed are never perfectly 4x6 anyway and this is still a good size for a mini album.
I like my mini albums very small and easy to hold. I can always trim a tiny bit from my photos.

Any questions? I'd be happy to answer them!!

I have one! How do YOU store your scraps?

First I'm Jealous that you get to go to Jenni Bowlins house for a yard sale! That would be so very cool!

Second fantastic way to keep a handle on scraps. I'm a hoarder and keep every last tine piece....lol One day I'll be brave and purge ;)

How cool that you get to go to Jenni Bowlin's house for a yard sale! This is a great idea for your scraps. I store mine in a file folder by colors...I actually need to purge that bin now.

OMGosh about a certain someone's yard sale! LOL!!

Great tip on the scraps idea :) I have mine in a HUGE plastic box and I "clean" it out quarterly (well, that's the goal...hmmm, missed last quarter! LOL!).

Great way to store and organize your scraps. Mine are hap-hazardly through into a small drawer but I need to go through it. Thanks for sharing!

Very neat and tidy - my scraps are a jumbled mess in three or four different containers!

I keep my scraps sorted by color in plastic paper trays. I don't make cards, so I tend to throw away the smaller scraps unless it is a phenomenal paper I want to use every tiny scrap of.
